Ward Fellowship – Application due January 31! (Gorrill) Class II, I

If you are interested in law, government, politics, community service, or helping people, this is a great opportunity for you! John William Ward Public Service Fellowship is a summer internship that places BLS students in the office of an elected or appointed public servant in state government, municipal government, the judicial system, or even the major press. Students are awarded a stipend for their participation. Students are selected based on community involvement, academic ability, application essays, and an interview process. Catapulta is Looking for Associate Editors! (Galego) All Classes

Interested in STEM, journalism, and/or science journalism? Become an associate editor for Catapulta! Our winter production begins next week: the copy (grammar editing) and content (scientific accuracy editing) departments will meet from Monday, January 31st to Thursday, February 3rd, while the layout department (graphic design) will meet from Monday, February 14th to Thursday, February 17th. Oculus Sign Up Temporary Fix (Hourigan) All Classes

We are working on the latest Oculus issue, where students on mobile can book slots but see a negative number of slots, and students on a Chromebook only see “Full” despite slots being available. While that is being fixed, Chromebook users can shrink the width of their browser window to reveal the “Book” button. Please see this video for a demonstration.

Seniors–SEAL OF BILITERACY–NO MCAS NEEDED! (Kelley) Class I

Good news Class I–you do NOT need the MCAS to qualify for the Seal of Biliteracy! They changed the policy after winter break to all graduating seniors who have passed one ELA course now qualify to take the Seal assessment.

Competition has wrapped up! (Yang) All Classes

Owen Jim found himself in a tough pool – facing the current World Champion and #1 world-ranked fencer right off the bat before moving on to the former World Cup bronze medalist, whom he defeated after coming back from a deficit. He was able to make it through to the elimination rounds where he was finally taken out by the eventual bronze medalist of the day. The Deitch Leadership Institute is accepting applications for its Summer Fellowship through Sunday, January 30. See the link below for more information. This unique leadership opportunity allows students to intern at prominent Boston area organizations representing a variety of industries (finance, law, government, arts, community service, more). Calling all lovers of poetry! Today, January 25, is the deadline to register for the Poetry Out Loud competition. W Block Programming in the Keefe Library (Ellis & Harari) All Classes

The Keefe Library is offering two programs during the W block that will run each Wednesday starting January 19. Stop by in advance to get a pass from Ms. Harari or Ms. Ellis.
1. Fiber Arts – Come down to knit, crochet, or embroider. Learn from your friends and relax in the new comfy seating areas. The Keefe Library has many different color yarns to choose from and an expert knitting teacher Ms. Harari. We even have needles to get you started! Beginner to an expert – all welcome.
2. D.E.A.R. is back! Drop Everything and Read during the wellness period last spring became a popular haven for students to come and relax with a book. Come with your own book, browse our displays, search our shelves, or ask for a recommendation from your librarians. Come enjoy an hour of reading in your school library!

BLS Debate Team Experiences Competitive Success! (Yoruk) All Classes

Over the weekend, members of the Boston Latin School Speech and Debate team competed at Lexington, Durham, and the NSDA Congress Qualifier. Here are highlights from this weekend!

At the Lexington Winter Invitational, Sam Chen(III) and Neil Jin(III) reached the semifinals, while Selina Tang(II) and Cinly Mo(II) reached the octafinals. The teams were awarded a gold bid and silver bid, respectively, to the Tournament of Champions (TOC) national tournament in April!

At the National Speech and Debate Congress Qualifiers, Zachary Chen(III) placed 2nd in the Congress House, qualifying for the National Speech and Debate Tournament in May! Maya Nelson(II) placed 4th in the Congress Senate, receiving a second alternate.

At the Cavalier Invitational hosted at Durham Academy, Michelle Zhang(II) reached the semifinals in Impromptu Speaking and Mira Yu(II) reached finals, placing 6th in the Program of Oral Interpretation.

The Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences (CURE) Program (Bateman) Class IV, III, II, I

The Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences (CURE) program introduces Massachusetts high school and college students from underrepresented populations to the world of cancer research by placing them in real research settings at local cancer research institutions. Our goal is to encourage students to pursue future careers in biosciences—particularly cancer research—giving practical meaning to academic course work and to expand and extend their interest in basic, clinical, and/or population science research. At the same time, students make a valuable contribution to the DF/HCC research mission. By participating in a program at DF/HCC—an NCI comprehensive cancer center with more than 1100 researchers across seven Harvard institutions—students will learn from experts who are devoted to preventing, treating, and curing cancer.

Program Features:

A full-time, hands-on summer experience in a cancer research environment at Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center

Comprehensive orientation program

Scientific and professional/career development seminars and journal clubs with researchers and YES for CURE and CURE – Summer Only students.

Preparation and presentation of an abstract and either a poster or a 10-12 minute PowerPoint oral presentation of their research project at the end of the summer.

Stipend

Program Start Date: June 16, 2022(high-schoolers)

Genes in Space (Bateman) All Classes

Genes in Space is a science contest that challenges students to design original DNA experiments that address real-life challenges and opportunities of space exploration. The contest is free and does not require equipment. Proposals will be judged solely on their creative and scientific merit. The winning experiment is conducted in space, and samples are returned to Earth for you to analyze! The submission deadline is April 11th, 2022. Learn more about the contest HERE.

25 awardees win a biotechnology prize pack for their educational institutions. Five Finalist teams additionally receive mentoring from Harvard and MIT Ph.D scientists and present their ideas to a panel of judges for a chance to win the contest and have their DNA experiment launch into space!

Teen Summer Writing Fellowship (Vasquez) Classes II, III, IV, V

The Teen Summer Writing Fellowship is an intensive, 3 week creative writing program. Through classes, workshops, and readings, students will generate new work, learn about the craft of writing, and gain knowledge of the writing/publishing world. Each of the 20 students chosen to participate will receive a stipend of $625 upon completing the program and its requirements. When: Mondays through Fridays, July 11th – July 29th, 2022. Tonight! School Parent Council (SPC) Meeting for Sixie Parents/Guardians on Modern Language Options (Pierce) Class VI

This evening, from 6:30-8:00 p.m., the SPC will host Program Director Ms. Christine Kelley for a special meeting for parents/guardians of Class VI (grade 7) students on modern language options.

In the spring, Class VI students will be asked to choose which language they would like to study – French, German, Italian, Mandarin, or Spanish – beginning next year. As this is a four-year commitment, it is important that students and families have an understanding of the available language options, and that they have two options with which they would be comfortable, as a student’s first choice selection cannot be guaranteed. The 2022 Unafraid Scholarship is now open to BPS undocumented seniors. Since its inception in 2017, the Unafraid Scholarship has awarded more than $280,000 to 105 deserving BPS graduates. “Playing Sports in College” Panel and Presentation, January 13, 7 pm on Zoom (NOTE DATE CHANGE) (Owens) All Classes

The BLS Athletic Department and Friends of Athletics will be hosting its 6th annual “Playing Sports in College” Presentation and Panel Discussion. We invite all student-athletes in all grades and their families to attend. Attendees will receive information regarding the NCAA, the Eligibility Center, and several other aspects pertinent to the recruitment process. In addition, BLS alumni who participated or are currently participating in collegiate athletics will join us to discuss their experiences in college athletics as well as their journey in attaining their spot at the next level whether it be at the Division 1, 2, 3, or club level. The panel members will be announced soon.

Geographic Data: An Enrichment Course for Students (Kennelly) Classes I, II, III, IV

This enrichment course, designed for students in grades 9-12, will introduce students to key concepts in mapping and data science using examples drawn from Boston—no experience needed! Students will develop informed perspectives on the relationship between widespread data collection and democracy; statistical bias and mapping; and urgent questions about race, place names and historical memory.

Participants will receive a $25 gift card. This enrichment course was developed with the Data + Feminism Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was supported by the Abdul Latif Jameel World Education Lab.

Poetry Out Loud competition (Moran) Classes I, II, III, IV

Calling all BLS poets and declaimers: Carry on BLS’s proud tradition of high achievement in the 2022 Poetry Out Loud competition for students in Classes I-IV. This year’s school-level contest will take place on January 27 at 2:30 pm. We are hoping to hold an in-person event in a location TBA; if this is not possible, we will host a Zoom event. Our school winner will advance to the regional semi-finals, sponsored by the Huntington Theater, with the state champion moving on to the national competition in the spring, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. Congratulations to the BLS Varsity team (William Liyuan IV, Chris Dech I, Hanson Huynh I, Biya Brook III, Kevin Wang IV, and Khugan Chan II) for their Octofinalist performance at the National C-Set History Bowl tournament. Chris Dech and William Liyuan had the highest overall performance, with consistent points scored throughout rounds. A valiant effort by our JV team as well, thank you all for your excellent work!

Access to the New York Times (Ellis) All Classes

The Keefe Library has extended the on-campus, full access subscription to the digital New York Times for staff and students. If you find an article at home and hit a paywall, remember that you will be able to get it once back at school or by searching the New York Times Gale database, which is always available both from home and school. Generally, the Gale databases can be useful to find a variety of articles that cover a particular current event. Both links are available from the Keefe Library Database page.

Junior NHS Decisions (Finnigan, LeDang-Collins) Class II

NHS decision letters were delivered to junior homerooms today (Thursday, 12/23). If you were not in HR today, please check with your HR teacher for your letter after the vacation. Pool Testing Resumes this Wednesday (Kwan) All Classes

Pool testing will resume on Wednesday, January 5 from 7:30 am – 3:00 pm by the Alma Mater statue. Please come before school, during your study, W block or after school until 3 pm. To help the process run more efficiently, we encourage siblings to pool test at the same time. Please note that pool testing is a PCR swab and that you should NOT participate in pool testing if you have tested positive for COVID within 90 days.

If you have not yet consented to pool testing , you can print out this form and have your parent/guardian sign it and return it to the main office.
