TAG would like to announce a door decorating contest. BLS Mental Health Student Advisory(Wang)

The BLS clinical team is seeking to relaunch a student advisory group focused on mental health programming and resources at BLS. The goals are to assess and enhance the infrastructure around mental health resources, design mental health focused educational programs, and offer a student voice for the mental health clinicians. Apply by Saturday, 9/30.

The BLS Peer Mentoring Program is looking for Juniors and Seniors to volunteer as mentors sharing your BLS knowledge and advice with our sixies. The program meets once a month during W block and mentors work with a small group of seventh graders. Mentors must commit to being responsible, dedicated, and caring to join us.

American College of Surgeons (ACS) Annual Clinical Congress(Bateman)

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) will host its annual Clinical Congress in Boston on October 25. ACS Division of Education hosts high school students from the local area for ”A Day with the American College of Surgeons” in which they explore the challenges and rewards of a medical career alongside surgeon volunteers. This program is designed as an outreach to historically excluded high school students. For this program, we want to identify students who aim to become surgeons and have strong academic records. We also aim to prioritize applicants who have marginalized identities across race, gender and sexuality. Everyone is welcome to apply! 15 students will be selected. Preference is given to juniors and seniors but some spots are held for freshmen and sophomores. The all day field trip on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 includes: speakers, a tour of the Exhibit Hall in which students can get exposure to the latest technologies in healthcare, and training to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. Multilingual Student Helpers Wanted for Back-to-School Night, September 28 Class (Ms. Pierce) IV, III, II, I

Join Best Buddies (Walker) All Classes

Be a difference maker! Best Buddies is a non-profit organization dedicated to ending the social and economic isolation of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The BLS chapter of Best Buddies meets every other W-Block in the Dining Hall and takes a monthly field trip to Madison Park Technical Vocational High School. If you are interested, please come to the October 11th info session in the Dining Hall during W-Block.

Additionally, the Best Buddies Friendship Walk will be taking place on October 14th, 1:00 PM, at Schrafft’s City Center. To register to walk with the BPS team, please visit www.bestbuddiesfriendshipwalk.org/boston/supporting/#BPSBestBuddies. Fundraising is optional.

First Public Declamation Tryouts: Thurs., Oct. 5 (Harari & Kerpan) All Classes

Open to all grades! Tryouts will be held on Thursday, October 5 in the auditorium between 2:30-4:00 pm. You may declaim a passage or abridged version of a poem, speech, book, essay, or play. AI/Academic Dishonesty Video Link (Murray/Chen) All Classes

During the W Block on 9/20, Classes V-I should have had the opportunity to watch a video on AI and Academic Integrity. If you did not see it, please watch this short, 15-minute video to ensure that we all have a common understanding of our academic and honor code expectations. Interview Lab for Juniors Begins Sep 26 (Levesque) Class II

The Junior Interview Lab will launch on Tuesday, September 26. All members of Class II are required to attend one workshop, facilitated during a study block. Led by Mr. Levesque (Deitch Leadership) and Ms. Gorrill (PIC), students will learn professional interviewing skills in preparation for summer internships and college interviews. Students will receive a Google Form where they will select an open study block in their schedule. If a conflict arises, the student can reschedule for another time, as many slots exist. Replacement OneCard/M7 passes (Payne-Hall) All Classes

There is a new system for all replacement One Card/M7 bus passes. If you need a replacement for your One Card/M7, here is the new form to submit for a replacement. Once you submit the form, you can expect to pick it up in the main office within 48 hours with a $20 cash replacement fee. You will receive an email when it’s ready for pickup. No Tests or Assessments in observance of Yom Kippur on Monday, September 25 (Gallagher) All Classes

In recognition of Yom Kippur which begins at sunset on Sunday, September 24, there will be no tests or assessments administered in classes on Monday, September 25. Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement, is considered the holiest day of the year by those of the Jewish faith. Students who observe the holiday will have an excused absence for the day and allowed full makeup privileges.

Games Day is GO! (Harari) All Classes

Do you love the card and board games? Mark your calendars for Games Day, every Friday after school in the Keefe Library. No need to sign up in advance and everyone is welcome. We’ve recently added new crowd-pleasers like Coup and Codenames but still have old favorites like Jenga and Clue. Come with a friend or make new ones; our Games Day staff is ready to play!

Fitness Center Open Before School (Butler) All Classes

The Fitness Center will be open before school (7:00-7:30 a.m.) daily, beginning Monday 9/18. You must fill out the Google form and scan the QR Code when you enter. If you do not do both of these things, you will not be able to use the fitness center that day. You will need to follow all rules and clean up after yourself (racking weights, wiping down equipment, etc.). Failure to do so will lead to your exclusion from the Fitness Center. Finally, as a reminder, this is only for students who wish to workout, not hang out. If you have any questions, see Coach Butler.

Hispanic Heritage Month Community Service Event (Jacobson-Peregrino) All Classes

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month TAG is having a community service event on Thursday, September 19th, right after school. We want to add decorations to the school to build a warmer atmosphere for this month-long celebration. The Franklin Park 5K cross-country course is one of the oldest cross-country race courses in the country! Generations of Boston Latin School students have competed in this cross-country course. Come and run or walk this historic course to experience it for yourself! If running is not your thing, surely the BLS Pep Band will help get you started and keep you going!

This year’s shipment of new locks has been delayed a week due to issues in manufacturing. We expect to receive the locks by Wednesday, September 20th. I will put a notice in The Bulletin, informing students when and where they may purchase a lock for $8. I’ll also make an announcement that morning. In the interim, Ms. Kwan is selling used locks for $5 every day in the foyer during Lunch. I, too, have some used locks – please see me in 022C, next to room 027.

Thinking about trying out for Public Declamation this year? Come to a short informational after-school meeting on Monday, Sept. 18 in the library’s electronic classroom. Capacity is limited to 100 students; space permitting, you may also sign up in the library after school. Students in grades 8-12 may now also sign up on Oculus to come to the library during study hall. Starting on Tues., Oct. 10, students in Class VI will also be allowed to come during study hall. Seeking Student Representatives (i.e. Homeroom Reps) (Levesque) All Classes

Student Council is now accepting names of Student Representatives from each homeroom. Student Reps serve as a representative voice of the general student body at monthly, school-wide Town Hall meetings. Topics vary each year, but recurring themes have been academic check-ins, BLS budget, health/wellness, and updated policies/procedures. Interested students can sign up with their homeroom teacher. Health Professions Recruitment & Exposure Program (HPREP) Class IV, III, II, I

We invite you to apply to HPREP, an outreach program hosted and organized by Harvard medical and graduate students.

The application is available at the link below. The application deadline is September 22nd, 2023 at 5 p.m. HPREP is a free 10-week program running from late October to early February. Sessions will occur in person on Saturdays, The curriculum exposes students to a range of science and health-related subjects, including genetics, immunology, cancer biology, anatomy, and mental health, as well as lab activities and medical simulations. The mentoring component pairs each student with a Harvard student (doctoral, master’s, dental, or medical), who works closely with them to develop a research project that culminates in an oral presentation at our closing ceremony. Course Change Request (Lane) All Classes

The Course Change Request window will open on Friday, September 15th, and will close at 3 p.m. on Friday, September 22nd. Students should understand, though, that some of these changes may not be possible since the schedule is very tight this year.

All requests must have a working parent or caregiver email included. Requests that involve adding or dropping a music or chorus class, an AP course, or an advanced Math course will not be processed until those requests receive approval from the Program Directors involved after a student has submitted their request, so have patience. The requests should be submitted using the Google form, from September 15th until September 22nd. They will be reviewed in the order that they were received. Again students should understand that some of these changes may not be possible since the schedule is very tight this year.

The supply sale will be ending this week on Thursday.
The BLS online store, www.bls.org/bookstore will open on September 14th. Both in-person shopping and online pickups will be available on Friday, September 15th during the lunch periods from 11:20-12:40. The store is located in the rear of the dining hall on the left side.
In-person shopping for parents will be available during the upcoming open houses on Thursday, September 21st, and 28th from 5:30-7:30 pm.

Looking for a fun way to get community service hours? Be a book room praefect! Come audition for BLS Theatre Company’s A Monster Calls (Gels) All Classes

Auditions are open to all grades for A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. Auditions are Tuesday and Wednesday, September 12-13. Materials are on the bulletin board across from the Black Box. Sign up for a specific audition time and grab a monologue sheet.

A monster has come walking. It’s come to tell Conor tales from when it walked before. And when it’s finished, Conor must tell his own story and face his deepest fears.

Play Ultimate Frisbee! (Luu) All Classes

The Boston Ultimate Disc Alliance (BUDA) is running club ultimate programs this fall for Boston students in high school, middle school (Grades 5-8), and Grades 3-4. No experience is required; ultimate is a fun and fast team sport, and the program will teach players the skills and how to play a self-officiated game.
