YEE Movie Fundraiser (Fernandez) All Classes-New

Join the YEE Club in watching the movie “Born in Gaza”, a film following 10 Palestinian children shortly after the siege of Gaza in 2014. Enjoy Palestinian baked goods and donate what you can for a Palestinian family to evacuate Gaza. The movie will be shown after school on Wednesday, May 22nd in Room 216.

Free Summer Computer Science Education Program: Code Tiers 2024 (Luu) All Classes-New

The Code Tiers team, Daffny Cardoso, Jialin Chen, and Melinda Wang, would like to introduce you to our 2024 Summer Program dedicated to mentoring students interested in Computer Science. The program is taught by high school/college students who are well-versed in coding, CAD, and robotics and has been running for the past 3 years, impacting over 350 students across the world.

Middle and high schoolers are welcome to participate in our workshops, and we highly encourage them to join! The program is completely free and virtual, and our workshops will be hosted on Wednesdays, from 2 – 4 PM, in July and August. Students are recommended to view our handbook linked below and to sign up using our Google form also linked below.

Note: In addition to student registration, we also have two volunteer opportunities available for students who are interested in helping the Code Tiers administration in outreach and mentorship.

BLSJCL Coin Wars (Moguel) All Classes-New

Coin Wars is a BLSJCL tradition where our amazing Classics teachers help us raise money to offset the cost of attending the National JCL convention this summer. Participating teachers are paired with an officer to raise money in friendly competition. You can help us get to Nationals by donating money — no amount is too small and coins are encouraged! — in the jars in participating teachers’ rooms. We will continue to raise money through next Tuesday (5/21). Current teacher totals can be found in the linked spreadsheet. BPS Pre-Participation Physicals for ALL Student Athletes (Owens) All Classes

Boston Public Schools is partnering with Mass General Brigham to provide free Pre- pre-participation physicals for student-athletes on Saturday, May 18 at Madison Park from 8:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. The event also includes food, information on summer programming, and the opportunity to speak with professionals from Mass General Brigham’s Center for Sports Performance and Rehab.

For more information, including registration, please see this link. While this does not replace the yearly physical the school requires, it does allow our student-athletes to obtain a physical for sports participation at no cost to the student or their families.

YouthCAN Summit 2024 (Fogel) All Classes

This Saturday, May 18th, marks BLS YouthCAN’s 18th annual Youth Climate Summit. This event is open to all BLS students, and those who go will receive 6 community service hours via Innerview. The event will be held at 32 Vassar Street, Boston, and will last from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

The theme of this year’s event is “Your place in a sustainable future.” Students will learn about sustainable industry from a variety of in-depth workshops, explore fun activities at tables, and listen to a keynote speech from Leah Ellis, Founder and CEO of sustainable concrete company Sublime Systems. By the end of the day, we hope that students will be inspired to create the change they want to see in the world in their future careers. We hope to see you all there!

Unpaid Science Internship Opportunity at the Manville School (Luu) Class II

The Manville School is looking for a current junior to fill a lab internship position. This hands-on position serves to support the Science, Technology & Engineering Department in providing all lab materials for their teachers across serving grades K-8. Body, Mind, and Soul presented by Mayor’s Youth Council Public Health Committee Friday May 17 (Luu) All Classes

The Mayor’s Youth Council Public Health Committee has created an immersive and interactive event where teenagers will learn strategies for taking care of their body, mind, and soul. Teenagers must understand they are worth the time and effort it takes to care for themselves. Every teenager and every person is worth the investment.

A series of three interactive workshops will focus on the body, mind, and soul. Attendees will practice centering positive thoughts and meditation and will have the chance to create their bath bombs with essential oils. Raffle prizes will include AirPods and self-care kits!

This event will take place on the 6th floor of the Bruce C. Bolling Building (which is a short bus ride from BLS) and will run from 4-7 PM this Friday, May 17.

We will be giving out 5-7 community service hours (plus free food and goodie bags)!!

The Student Council is proud to announce the following faculty members as recipients of the 2024 Crystal Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching – Peter Sullivan, Rachel Kelly, and Danny De Velis. The #CreateConnectCare campaign, or #CCC, is an impact media campaign run by Creative Visions with the goal of breaking the stigma around mental health. Students can share their voice on mental health and what it means to them while also engaging with peers on a national level! The submission to the campaign is intended to be relaxing and promote youth mental well-being overall through any form of creative expression. Keep your Chromebook up to date by forcing the latest Chrome updates. The process can take 15-30 minutes, depending on the number of updates, but keeps sites from failing to load or function properly.

StatStart (Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Biostatistics Department (Bateman) Class V, IV, III, II

The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Biostatistics Department is excited to host StatStart virtually this year (free). StatStart is a month-long summer program and priority is given to first-generation or low-income students high school students. Students participating in the program will receive an introduction to statistics, data science, and computing and will have the opportunity to analyze real-world data by working in group projects led by a graduate student mentor. We will host the program from July 1st to July 25th, Monday to Thursday from 10 AM – 2 PM EST. Classes will be taught at the School of Public Health by Biostats PhD students who, in addition to sharing their statistical expertise, will provide mentorship and college preparatory skills. The program will conclude with student presentations on Friday, July 26th. The only requirement to apply is a solid grasp of freshmen-level algebra. The application for StatStart is now live and due on Friday, May 24, 2024.

Ladder Internships is a selective start-up internship program for high school students, founded and run by Harvard graduate students. In the program, students work with supervisors from top start-ups to work on real-world projects in a real start-up environment. Science Display Case Competition (Osowiecki) All Classes

The Science Display Case Competition allows BLS students to submit a 2D or 3D design to be installed in the display case across the hall from room 314. Students from all grades can participate, and the design can be about any scientific topic.

Design must:

* Fit within 21″ wide x 40″ tall x 6.5″ deep (front-to-back) case

* Not require electricity * Contain objects that can stand on their own (if the design is 3D)

* Be sturdy enough to withstand the test of time

* Stay school-appropriate! * Contain no more than 40 words of text in total

Submissions include:

* One-sentence description of the topic

* 3-5 sentences explaining your topic and how your display explains/shows/conveys your topic

* 2-3 pictures of your display at different animals Deadline: 11:59 pm June 3, 2024

Ms. Roxana Pleacoff has been with *DAAD (The German Academic Exchange Service German: Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) NY office for 3 years. She has worked in the international exchange field for over 20 years. As a Program Officer with DAAD her main role is to offer support and guidance to German DAAD grantees while on their academic programs in North America and to act as liaison between DAAD grantees and their U.S. or Canadian institutions. Ms.Pleacoff will inform students and their families of the entry requirements at German universities and about DAAD grant programs during this planned Zoom meeting. Stock Market Challenge (Levesque) Class IV, III, II, I

The Deitch Leadership Institute will partner with Junior Achievement to offer Take Stock in Your Future and the Stock Market Challenge. Mr. Levesque will teach four, 60-minute workshops on stock fundamentals after school on Thursdays from May 9 – May 30. Qualifying teams will then advance to the Stock Market Challenge at Junior Achievement in Charlestown on June 6th. The team with the largest investment portfolio will win. BLS Represents at DECA Nationals (Levesque) All Classes

Congratulations to six BLS students who qualified to compete at DECA Nationals this past week in Anaheim, CA – Roan Wilcox (II), Steven Miall (II), Andrew Lai (II), Mary Deng (III), Rahul Bansal (III), and Sophia Fortuin (IV).

More than 20,000 students competed in multiple business categories requiring tests, case studies, papers, and presentations. Roan Wilcox achieved the highest placement in BLS history, taking 5th place in the category of Business Finance Series.

BLS Mock Trial Team Delivers Masterful Performance At National Moot Court Championship (Ruzzo) All Classes

The National Moot Court Championship, sponsored by Yale, Duke, and the University of Chicago, was held over the weekend. After a series of tournaments nationwide, two two-person teams from BLS qualified for the competition: Michelle Chen & Emily Yu and Ruth Gelaye & Amirah Redwing.

After four rounds of competition, both BLS teams finished in the top ten with Emily and Michelle finishing second overall with a record of 7-0-1.

In addition, Emily Yu won a Top Speaker award for her advocacy skills.

Our yearbook is scheduled for fall delivery and pick up in November to represent all of our senior end-of-the-year activities, including prom, prize night, and graduation. Please note: we may only be able to order a yearbook for the students who submit payment to Ms. Stiven by Friday, May 17th, 2024. Unfortunately, we no longer have the funds to order additional books for students who might decide to order a book after the order has been placed. Please order sooner rather than later so we can order them!

BLSJCL Takes 1st Place at State Convention! (Moguel) All Classes-Updated

Congratulations to the officers and members of BLSJCL, which placed 1st Place in Whole School contests at the MassJCL State Convention this past weekend! 8 BLS students placed in the Top 10 of Overall Individual contests! The Advanced Certamen team won 3rd Place, Intermediate won 1st Place, and Novice won 1st Place! All 3 of our candidates were elected to the state executive board: Joseph Hemr (2nd VP), Olivia Chen (Historian), and Andy Yu (Technical Coordinator) For full results, see this Doc.
