American College of Surgeons (ACS) Annual Clinical Congress(Bateman)

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) will host its annual Clinical Congress in Boston on October 25. ACS Division of Education hosts high school students from the local area for ”A Day with the American College of Surgeons” in which they explore the challenges and rewards of a medical career alongside surgeon volunteers. This program is designed as an outreach to historically excluded high school students. For this program, we want to identify students who aim to become surgeons and have strong academic records. We also aim to prioritize applicants who have marginalized identities across race, gender and sexuality. Everyone is welcome to apply! 15 students will be selected. Preference is given to juniors and seniors but some spots are held for freshmen and sophomores. The all day field trip on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 includes: speakers, a tour of the Exhibit Hall in which students can get exposure to the latest technologies in healthcare, and training to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. 2021 Winter Concerts Program Cover Contest (Pierce) All Classes

Friends of the Arts is now accepting entries of artwork to be chosen for the cover of the 2021 Winter Concerts program.  The contest is open to all BLS students, and there is one $100 first prize and two $50 runner-up prizes. Programs will be in two formats, some digital and some printed. The runner-up artwork will also be featured in both formats.

The program’s artwork should be 5” x 7”. Remember the art pieces should allow room for text, so please consider this while coming up with your design. To see examples of past winter arts program winners click below:

Editorial Guidance: The artwork can refer to BLS/Winter/Music. BLS is a melting pot of cultures and value systems, therefore the artwork should have universal appeal. It is important to be sensitive to peoples of all faiths and non-believers alike, so the artwork should not include religious references and/or images solely associated with one culture’s beliefs.

Art should be created and/or scanned at a resolution of 300dpi and should be submitted to the Friends of the Arts by e-mail with a subject line reading Art Contest Entry. Email submissions to SprezzaturaVT@gmail.com. The deadline is Tuesday November 23rd, 2021, by 6:00 p.m. Direct any questions to Vali Tamm at valitamm@yahoo.com.

MOTH 2021, organized by the 20-21 Topol Fellows (Freeman) Class I, II, III, IV

The 4th annual MOTH story day at Boston Latin School, organized by Boston Latin’s Topol Fellows in Peace and Non-Violence, will feature students and faculty presenting 10 to 15 minute stories in a day-long series of sessions (spread over two days due to our current hybrid schedule): Monday, April 12 and Tuesday, April 13.

MOTH stories originated in 1997, first as local live events, then as a radio program and podcast and now as events all over the world. Over 25,000 Moth stories have been recorded to date. All stories are true, as seen from the perspective of the storyteller, and are delivered mostly extemporaneously for approximately ten minutes each.

Given the sensitive and upsetting nature of several of the stories, we have decided that it is prudent to open this event to class I, II, III, and IV students only. This is the first time several of the speakers have told their stories in a public setting, so we ask that students be respectful of the speakers and their topics and show their support. And a note: there are a few presentations spread among the various MOTH sessions that require trigger warnings, due to references to death, depression, drinking and/or drugs, eating disorders, hospitalizations, mental health struggles, physical injury, suicidal thoughts, sexual assault, torture, or violence. A trigger warning will be announced at the start of each session.

Sign ups during class sessions will be done by classroom teachers. If you have a free period, you can sign up for yourself. Please use this SignUp Genius

Thank you! If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Judi Freeman (jfreeman@bostonpublicschools.org).
