SEL Tip of the Week (Prosper) All Classes

Starting this academic year, the BLS clinical team composed of 2 school-based psychologists (Dr. Prosper and Dr. Kaye from Children’s Hospital), 3 social workers (Ms. Vasquez, Ms. Wang, and Ms. Abrha), and 3 school psychologists (Ms. Clougher, Mr. Lo, and Ms. Miller) are launching a mental health initiative (one of many to come, stay tuned!) to help raise mental health awareness, increase knowledge about how to increase socio-emotional wellness and decrease emotional turmoil, and promote overall wellness. This mental health initiative will consist of sharing a SEL (socio-emotional learning and wellness) tip every week (on Mondays). Today, Tuesday, October 10 has been named World Mental Health Day by the World Health Organization. The overall objective of World Mental Health Day is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health. Today is thus a great day to start our mental health initiative of SEL tip of the week. So here goes: · Research has shown time and time again that the leading risk factor making individuals highly vulnerable to developing a mental health disorder is social isolation, alienation, and rejection. Furthermore, research has found that having at least one person in our life that understands us and cheers us on is a great protective factor for mental health difficulties. o SEL tip of the week: “Identify Your Person” Take some time today or this week to identify and/or remind ourselves of at least one person we can count on for emotional support and validation be it a friend, peer, co-worker, classmate, teacher, coach, guidance counselor, administrator, parent, extended family member, neighbor, etc. In addition, being kind to one another, embracing each other’s differences, and being curious about others and not judgmental can go a long way in reducing social isolation and alienation and therefore increasing mental wellness. Have a good week! Sincerely, The BLS Clinical Team

AP Classroom registration and payment(Kennelly)

All students enrolled in AP courses at BLS are required to sign up for their courses in AP Classroom with codes provided by their teachers and take the corresponding AP exam in May. Students must also pay for exams unless they are eligible for the Zero Fee Waiver. All current AP students should be enrolled in AP Classroom at this time. Students can check their College Board account to verify their enrollment in AP Classroom. Students must be enrolled in AP Classroom in order for an exam to be ordered and to test in May. Students that are not eligible for the Zero Fee Waiver must pay for their AP exams either on the BPS AP payment portal or by check or money order made payable to BLS and delivered to Mr. Kennelly. Students eligible for the fee waiver will be notified by email in October. Those eligible last year will probably be eligible again this year. While students must register for AP Classroom in September, payments may be made anytime between September and March 1, 2024.

Class of 2024 Seal of Biliteracy testing and sign up! (Kelley)

Are you a bilingual and/or student studying a world language who wants to obtain a Seal of Biliteracy? The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a school district and state in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. BPS invites all graduating seniors to sign up for an assessment (STAMP Assessment, WorldSpeak Assessment or portfolio) to determine your qualification. Sign up with the Google form by the end of the day Wednesday, October 4 and take either the STAMP Assessment, WorldSpeak Assessment or get more information around being assessed with portfolio for languages not included in the testing. Once you sign up, more information will be sent out explaining the assessments. The STAMP test will measure your ability to read, speak, write and understand the language. If you have a 4 or 5 on an AP Language Exam (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Spanish), you have already qualified and do not need to take an additional assessment in that language. If you have any questions, please contact Modern Languages Program Director Mrs. Kelley at ckelley2@bostonpublicschools.org. Testing will take place during the school day on October 16 OR October 17 from R1 to R4 depending on how long you need to complete the test. More details will be sent out once you sign up.
