German Program: Goethe Institute Event: 5/1 unveiling of student work (Floerke) All Classes

Artist Sergio Beltrán-García worked with youth artists from Boston (3 of the students are from BLS: Emily Gillis; Tia Hashem and Molly Griffiths)) to make sense of monuments, and memorials, memory, representation, and justice. Through a series of collaborative art workshops, site visits, readings, and conversations, they explored how a memorial can become a tool for positive change and how to critique existing monuments. Together they researched, conceptualized, and built a collaborative memorial in public space that honors personal and collective histories that are important to them. In the process, the students learned about inclusive and participatory approaches to monuments and memorialization, and how to think creatively about questions of history, representation, and accessibility.

Register Here: www.goethe.de/ins/us/en/sta/bos/ver.cfm?event_id=22904596 to see their collaborative memorial on Sunday 5/1 at the Goethe Institute

Please come and visit the AP German exhibit at the Keefe library! All Classes

At the end of the unit, AP German students were tasked with thinking of someone, either from their family, their community, or simply someone they know, who has an immigration/migration background, and to tell their story. However, this assignment went beyond a writing assignment. Students needed to show and describe the immigrant’s story by choosing a pair of shoes and when possible decorating these to represent the immigrant’s “path” in life.

Ms. Harari and Ms. Deeth were so kind to agree to display the shoes and excerpts of the students’ writings. There are some very personal stories the students have shared in their writing (the texts are displayed in German and English) and depicted visually, “tread” carefully and respectfully as you read and view them.

Always keep in mind, that there are many roads we and those before us must walk down to become the person we are.

An excerpt from Goethe’s Faust comes to mind when reading these stories:

“There are but two roads that lead to an important goal and to the doing of great things: strength and perseverance. Strength is the lot of but a few privileged men; but austere perseverance, harsh and continuous, may be employed by the smallest of us and rarely fails of its purpose, for its silent power grows irresistibly greater with time.”

ORDER YOUR YEARBOOK TODAY! (Craven) Class I

Order Your Yearbook Today!

Each senior who wishes to order a 2022 yearbook is asked to order a yearbook by April 30, 2022. In 1998, the cost of the yearbook was $95.00 for 143 pages, only 60 of which were in color. Through the years, in spite of rising costs due to inflation, we have been able to negotiate with Balfour because of our strong relationship with the company for over thirty years, and have capped the cost for our students. Today, Liber Actorum is $100.00 for 200 pages of full color! Payment envelopes are available from Mrs. Craven in Room 105. If paying by check, please make the check payable to Boston Latin School and include your name /homeroom/yearbook in the memo section. Payments must be submitted in the distributed payment envelopes. The envelope is kept as a record of your payment for yearbook pickup in November. In order to represent all of our senior end-of-the-year activities, including prom, prize night, and graduation, our yearbook is scheduled for fall delivery. Please note: we are only able to order a yearbook for the students who submit payment to Mrs. Craven by April 30, 2022. Unfortunately, we no longer have the funds to order additional books for students who might decide to order a book after the order has been placed. Please order soon!
