As this challenging school year comes to a close, we wanted to share some good news that has come out of all that has happened, and that is the Anti-bias Student Committee (ASC)! We are a group of Class V students taking Civics this year, who attended the Trouble the Waters: Heal the World conference, hosted by the United Nations and were inspired to take action in our school community. We have formed a group to address specific needs that were highlighted in the BIPOC video that the C.C.C made — specifically, conversations around implicit bias.
We are working closely with the administration (Ms. Murray, Ms. Lewis-DaPonte, and Ms. Skerritt) to form a trained student mediation board (12 students total — currently there are 7 members) that will be involved in supporting productive conversations as part of BLS’s response to reported bias-based incidents. This student board will provide support for peers and faculty by providing student insight as a means of facilitating healthy conversations after an incident is reported.
We are currently working to expand and diversify the membership of our team. Therefore we would like to survey the student body and see if anyone is interested in becoming a member of ASC!
