BLS held its annual Spelling Bee Competition yesterday and it was a fierce one with a record breaking number of students who participated in the event.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make the Spelling Bee a memorable experience and to the students who remained behind to cheer on their classmates. Your sportsmanship was noted.

Open to all classes! Please try out for the Fourth Public Declamation. Submissions are due by Friday, 2/27 by 11:59pm. Tryouts are after school starting at 2:15pm on 3/5. You should memorize at least 1 minute of your piece (no introduction) in time for tryouts. The Fourth Public Declamation performance is scheduled for Thursday, 3/19 R1-R2, and the audience will be Class III. Please email Mx. Amico or Mr. Kerpan with any questions! BLS A.S.I.A. x KKCS Lunar New Year Celebration + Traditional Clothing Friday 2/27 (Luu and Chen)-All Classes

BLS A.S.I.A. will be hosting the Kwong Kow Chinese School (KKCS) Lion Dance Team for a performance on Friday, February 27th at 2:30 PM in the Dining Hall to celebrate Lunar New Year. Additionally, all students are welcome to dress in their traditional clothing on that day.

Entry is free and snacks will be provided! All students are welcome and encouraged to bring a friend to usher in the Year of the Horse. We hope to see you there!

U.S. History Essay Contest (Kennelly) All Classes

The South Boston Civic Assoc. is soliciting entries for its annual essay contest. Several BLS students have won in the past. This year could be your turn. Here are the prompts. HS Essay Question: Essay competition is open to all students in grades 9-12

-Explain the impact of British taxation policies on the relationship between the British government and the 13 colonies.

-7th – 8th grade Essay Questions: South Boston residents only for grades 7-8

– What was Abigail Adams role in the American Revolution?

BLS A.S.I.A. is on the lookout for a student to create this year’s Asian Night booklet cover, and you will be PAID! Panel on Careers in Juvenile Justice at Suffolk University – This Thursday! (Luu) Class III, II, I I

Suffolk University is hosting a panel this coming Thursday. All students from every major are invited to join this discussion about Juvenile Justice and the variety of career opportunities available. The panel will bring together different systems perspectives – Legal, Psychology, Sociological, Educational – along with first-hand insights from practitioners of this work who attendees can learn from and network with as they consider entering or advancing in this field. The Food Project’s summer Seed Crew (Clougherty) Class III, II, I

Are you a teen curious about farming, community partnership, social justice, and looking for a summer job? Apply to be a part of The Food Project’s summer Seed Crew youth program! Each summer, we recruit students between the ages of 14 and 17 to work on our urban and suburban farms in Boston, Lincoln, Lynn, and Wenham, MA. During this six-week program, you will work with staff to grow vegetables and distribute thousands of pounds of produce while developing leadership, teamwork, and civic participation skills. WPI’s Frontiers – Summer STEM Program (Bateman) Class III, II, I

Mark Thomas Memorial Fund/Boston Bridges Initiative and WPI are collaborating to provide an exciting opportunity for 5 MetCO, BLS, BLA or JDO’B students to apply for a full scholarship to attend WPI’s Frontiers summer STEM program at no cost. Frontiers is a two-week residential program that offers high-performing students in math and science the chance to explore STEM at WPI, while experiencing a taste of college life alongside like-minded peers from around the world. Argo Workshops (Moon) All Classes

This upcoming Tuesday (2/10) and Wednesday (2/11) we will be hosting Argo midyear workshops in preparation for the upcoming issues. During the workshop, we will introduce all of our sections, both writing and production.

We will meet both days at 2:30 in room 207. Editors have prepared presentations for you to get a feel of your section or learn about a new section. We hope to see you there.

Class V NAEP Testing (Lewis-da Ponte) Class V

Those students who received notification of their selection for the National Assessment of Educational Progress testing on Wednesday, Feb 11, 2026, are reminded that they will receive a pass in HR either Monday or Tuesday, Feb 9th or 10th, to report to the dining hall at the start of R2 on Wednesday, Feb 11th, for the exam.

The exam is a minimum of 70 minutes, so all students will miss R2 and W Block, and perhaps some may miss part of or all of R3, too.

Students should bring their fully charged Chromebook to the testing session, and should have presented their pass to any teacher whose class they will/may miss the day of testing (Day 3; R2, W Block, and R3).

BLS Powerlifting Valentine’s Day Cake-Pop Fundraiser (Cordeiro) All Classes

Do you love sweets? Do you want to treat someone with a special gift, or even better, yourself? The BLS Powerlifting team is making and selling their own Valentine’s Day cake pops to fundraise for the expenses of their ever-growing team and to compete in this year’s 2026 High School Nationals in Killeen, Texas.

Middlesex Squared Opportunity (Encarnacao) Class IV

Middlesex Squared is a free, selective, three-year residential college access program for high-achieving first-generation and/or low-income students, beginning the summer after 9th grade. Scholars live and learn on the Middlesex School campus in Concord, MA while exploring STEM coursework, preparing for college, building leadership skills, and forming a strong community. Super Smash Bros Ultimate Tournament – Boston Latin School Service Collective (Fogel) All Classes (Updated)

On February 10, 2026, the Boston Latin School Service Collective will host the first-ever Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Tournament. The event will be completely free of charge. Come to room 125 to have fun, compete against others, and prove to the school that you are the ultimate Smash Bros champion!

Black History Month Spirit Week – NEXT WEEK (Pinchem/Metayer) All Classes

Join BLS B.L.A.C.K. next week, February 2-6, as we kick off Black History Month with a Spirit Week! 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of Black History Month; a century of celebrating Black history, achievement, culture, and impact.

Spirit Week Themes:

  • Monday, February 2: Dress Your Best: Show up sharp and stylish
  • Tuesday, February 3 (Early dismissal day): Rep Your Flag: Represent your heritage and roots
  • Wednesday, February 4: Dress as an Artist: Come dressed as your favorite Black artist, creator, or cultural icon
  • Thursday, February 5:Throwback Thursday: Wear vintage or old-school inspired outfits
  • Friday, February 6: Blackout Friday: Wear all black to close out the week in unity
