Congratulations to Nicla Maribito for earning a spot on the USA team for the International Linguistics Olympiad! (Nabbefeld) All Classes-New

After placing fourth in the United States and Canada, Nicla Marabito (I) was awarded a Gold Medal in the 2025 North American Computational Linguistics Open Competition (NACLO). She is one of eight students selected to represent the USA at the 2025 International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL). The IOL is one of the 12 International Science Olympiads and will take place in Taipei, Taiwan, this July. Students are reminded to meet Ms. Lewis-da Ponte in the front foyer at 11:45 on Friday, May 23rd, with their signed permission slips. NHS Decisions & Induction (Finnigan) Class II, I

NHS decision letters were delivered to homerooms today (Tues, 5/20). Students who did not receive their letters should check with their HR teacher. All applicants are reminded to read their decision letters carefully, as they contain important information regarding next steps for accepted students and reasons for non-selection, with recommendations for future application rounds for those not accepted. All students accepted into NHS for this year will be inducted on Wednesday, 5/28, during W-Block and R3, with all juniors attending as the audience. More information about the events of that day will be emailed to impacted students in the coming days.

Early Dismissal Reminder (Clougherty) All Classes

Please be reminded that our Early Dismissal Procedure at BLS is as follows:

1) The parent or guardian must complete the “Student Absence, Early Dismissal, and Late Arrival Reporting Form” on the BLS.org website under the Families tab.

2) Students must obtain a paper pass from the Guidance Office in Room 107 before 7:45 on the day of their early dismissal.

3) Students must report to Room 107 at the time of their dismissal.

Our Early Dismissal policy and procedure are outlined on page 9 of the student handbook. Thank you for taking note of these procedural expectations prior to initiating a request to leave school early.

Apply to Participate in Science Fair (2025-2026 SY) (Bateman) Class V, IV, III, II, I

All students who wish to compete in the Region VI (Boston City), Massachusetts State, and national/international science fair competitions next year 25-26 should complete this application form by May 30, bit.ly/3SdGL6R.

Screening of 20 Days in Mariupol after school this Friday (Bowles) All Classes

Please join us after school on Friday, 5/16 in room 307 for a film screening of 20 Days in Mariupol which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Some students in Facing History are hosting this screening as a joint project with peers in the Ukraine Youth Action Network. We will watch the film together, then reflect on it together, and finally consider ways we can support those affected. Our Ukrainian peers in Warsaw hosted a screening as well. We will have snacks available. There is no cost, but we will accept donations and will donate the proceeds to the Ukraine Red Cross.

Harvard Ushers: Regular Clothes For Rehearsal on Friday, May 23, 2025 (Ms. Lewis-da Ponte) Class III, II

Students do not need to dress up for the rehearsal on Friday, May 23, 2025 when we head over to Harvard College during R5 – R7. The day of commencement, Thursday, May 29th, students will need to be at BLS no later than 6:00 am, dressed in black pants or skirt; a white shirt/blouse; shoes (no sneakers or flip flops). Any student not properly attired will not be allowed to serve.

Dear members of the Class of 2025 and families,

You are cordially invited to the 10th Annual BLS BLACK and TAG Celebratory on Sunday, June 8 from 3:00 – 5:00 PM. This celebration is a time honored tradition at BLS that dates back to the 1970s. The first BLS celebration of this kind was held at St. Cyprian’s Church in Roxbury. From there it moved to Simmons College and then to the historic Harriet Tubman House. This year, it will take place in the Fiction Room of the BLS Library.

This event is hosted by BLS B.L.A.C.K. (Black Leaders Aspiring for Change and Knowledge) and BLS T.A.G (Talented and Gifted Latino) and is open to everyone. During this event, members of BLS family, including faculty, staff, alumni and current students, will recognize and celebrate the collective achievements of members of the Class of 2025 who identify as Black and/or Latinx. You do not have to identify as a member of one or both of these groups to attend the celebratory. All are welcome. The program will include amazing guest speakers, great music, inspiring words of wisdom, and light refreshments. During the celebration, the graduating seniors will also receive their kente and/or serape stoles to wear on graduation day!

NHS Applications (Finnigan) Class II, I

Juniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.5+ from 9th and 10th grades, and seniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ from 9th, 10th, and 11th grades, have been invited to apply for membership in the National Honor Society (note: students with major infractions or repeated minor infractions from the current or previous school year are not invited to apply, per the policy on p. 24 of the Student Handbook). BLS Crew Ergathon This Weekend (Fearon) All Classes

BLS Crew Ergathon 2025! Please support BLS Crew’s biggest fundraiser being held on Saturday, May 3 (9AM-3PM) at Christopher Columbus Park in the North End. During this event, BLS Crew athletes are sponsored to row on ergometers outdoors for one hour or 10K meters. Funds raised support rower financial aid, boat and equipment investments, and gear maintenance. Boston Globe Foundation/Richard J. Phelps Scholar-Athlete scholarship program (Owens) Class I

This year, 18 total scholarships valued at $4,000 apiece will be awarded to one male and one female from MIAA Districts 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, one male and one female from Central Mass. (Districts 2/3), and one male and female from the city of Boston. The scholarships will be awarded based on excellence in academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities, and will go directly toward each student’s post-secondary education.

Please fill out the 2025 application and return it to the Boston Globe Foundation by Monday, May 12. Candidates must supply the required information with the application (official high school transcript and letter of recommendation from the principal, a guidance counselor/teacher, or a coach).

Tour Guides Wanted for May 3 Open House for Invited Sixies and Families (Pierce) Class III, II, I

Friendly and spirited students in Class III-I are needed as tour guides for incoming sixies and families at the Invited Student Open House on Saturday, May 3. Please sign up for one or both sessions: 8:30-10:45 with an 8:00 arrival and/or 11:00-1:00, with a 10:30 arrival here. There are also a limited number of spots for Class III students who speak a language aside from English. Those who have not done tour guiding before must stop by the Schawbel Center on either Wednesday, April 30 or Thursday, May 1, between 2:30-3:30. Those who have done tour guiding but do not have a lanyard must also come to the Schwabel Center. Community service hours will be awarded.
