Career Readiness Day at Deloitte (Levesque) Class III, II, I (New)

Junior Achievement has partnered with Deloitte, the largest professional services/consulting firm in the world, for a day of career readiness for Boston high school students. The program includes job shadowing, professional panels, and mock interviews. Friday, June 9th from 9:00 am-1:30 pm at Deloitte on Berkeley St. Class I-III. Get ready for Public Declamation 2023-24! (Harari & Kerpan) All Classes

Thinking about trying out for Public Declamation next year? Come to a short informational after-school meeting on Tuesday, May 30 in the library’s electronic classroom. Everyone’s welcome and encouraged to attend: beginners and experienced declaimers alike! We’ll review the criteria for selecting pieces, share best practices for memorizing, and watch examples of what declamation is all about. Bring whatever you’re considering for next year! Junior Achievement Summer Institute (w/ stipend) (Levesque) Class IV, III, II, I

This summer 50 high school students will participate in the Junior Achievement Summer Institute, a five-day, in-person learning experience where students engage in a series of interactive company-led workshops on personal finance, stock market, design thinking, pitching a product, career exploration, interviewing skills, and more. In the culminating session, Speed Networking, students will connect with business professionals from a variety of industries. Participants will receive a $500 stipend. NHS’s De-Stress Fest – This Friday! (Finnigan) All Classes

Looking for an opportunity to unwind and connect with friends and classmates before heading into the final stretch of the year and final exams? Then look no further! Our National Honor Society members are excited to introduce De-Stress Fest, a student-run event that will feature a number of different activities designed to let you unwind and refocus as you head into the final weeks of the school year. Activities will include a variety of games, competitions, arts and crafts stations, photo booths, music, performances, and more, all designed with the theme “Y2K” in mind. Facing History exhibition of monuments and memorials on view in the Seevak Room (Freeman) All Classes

As part of an annual assignment, grade 11 and 12 Facing History students are asked to create a memorial or monument to topics related to the issues we addressed in the course. The results will be on view in the Seevak room (309) from Monday, May 22 through Friday, June 2. Turkish Earthquake Relief Project- View Video For a Good Cause! (Sample) All Classes

9th Grader Aylin Ozdemir is spreading the word about an important cause. After the devastating earthquakes that hit Turkey in February, Aylin and a group of talented musicians convened at the Berklee College of Music to record an arrangement by Berklee student Yagmur Soydemir. The money collected from views and donations from the link in the description goes directly to the Turkish communities affected by the earthquakes. Please take a moment to watch this video to support Aylin and her home country of Turkey.

2) Students should have their signed permission slip, which I will collect before we head out. If there’s no signed slip, there’s no ushering.

Students may turn the slip into me beforehand: I am usually in the foyer most mornings until 7:30; in the DH during 1st and 3rd Lunches; my office is located on the Ground Floor, room 022C, next to 027.

3) Students should NOT dress up for the run-through; however, you MUST BE dressed appropriately on the day of the exercises, Thursday, May 25, 2023; otherwise, you will not be allowed to serve. Please refer to the email I sent you if there are questions.

Decision letters for prospective NHS students were delivered to senior and junior HRs on Tuesday 5/16 and Wednesday 5/17, respectively. All applicants should be sure to read their letters carefully, as they contain important information regarding next steps for accepted students or rationales in the case of non-selection. Senior Class Officer Elections (Sarkis/Encarnacao) Class II

Attention all juniors! It’s time to make your voices heard and participate in the selection of your class officers for the upcoming academic year. The positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary are up for grabs, and we encourage you to consider running for these crucial roles.

To kick-start the election process, we will be holding a brief information meeting in Room 208 on Wednesday, May 17 after school. This meeting will provide you with important details about the responsibilities and expectations of each position. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about the roles and ask any questions you may have.

If you are interested in running for any of the senior class officer positions, please email both Ms. Sarkis and Ms. Encarnacao of your intent to run by Wednesday, May 24. It is essential to meet this deadline to ensure your name appears on the official ballot.

The first round of elections will take place on Wednesday, June 7. During this round, you will have the chance to cast your vote for your preferred candidates. The top two candidates from each position will move on to the final vote, which will occur on Tuesday, June 13.

Your participation in these elections is vital to shaping the senior class experience and ensuring that your voices are represented. We look forward to your enthusiastic engagement in this democratic process.

A Panel Discussion with Boston City Councilors presented by the Mayor’s Youth Council (Luu) All Classes

My name is Kevin Zhong (II) and I am a leader of the Boston Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC). Along with my co-leader Mira Yu (I) and our Neighborhood Working Group, we are partnering with Council President Flynn’s office to host a panel discussion with Boston City Councilors at the Central Boston Public Library on Wednesday, May 24th from 5:30-7pm.

This event is free and open to all high school-aged youth in Boston. During the panel, we will alternate between asking pre-planned and audience questions. We hope that this will be a fun and engaging event to foster youth interest and help students develop a better understanding of the City government and elected leaders in a lighthearted, conversational format.

Tour Guides Wanted for May 20 Open House for New Students! (Pierce) Class III, II, I

Friendly and spirited students in Class III-I are needed as in-person tour guides for newly invited students and families.  The Open House for future members of the Class of 2029 and 2027 will be held on Saturday, May 20.  Incoming sixies and families are invited for one of two times, from 8:30-10:45 or 11:00-12:45, and new Bsies from 1:30-3:00. It is helpful if you can attend both or all sessions.  Interested students should complete this May 20 Tour Guide Sign Up Form by Monday, May 15 at 6:00 p.m. and attend the Tour Guide Training and Information session during W Block, Wednesday, May 17, in the Black Box. (Class III students who will be taking the MCAS at that time should note this on the form.)

Former Bsies are highly encouraged to participate in the afternoon session for incoming 9th graders.  Additionally,  students who speak languages other than English are especially needed. If you know me, you know I know nothing about sports (for example, when I loudly yelled TRAFFIC instead of TRAVEL during the faculty vs staff basketball game). Our National Honor Society members are excited to introduce De-Stress Fest, a student-run event that will feature a number of different activities designed to let you unwind and refocus as you head into the final crazy weeks of the school year. Activities will include a variety of games, competitions, arts and crafts stations, photo booths, music, performances, and more, all designed with the theme “Y2K” in mind. Boston University Upward Bound and Boston University Upward Bound Math Science

Openings for high school students who live in Dorchester, East Boston, Mattapan, or Roxbury.

Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math Science are rigorous college-prep programs that provide classes, tutoring, social enrichment, and personal support throughout high school for first-generation college potential high school students or students from low-income households. Year-round services include an academically intensive six-week summer program (where students stay at BU) and an on-campus after-school program of tutoring and MCAS English, MCAS Math, MCAS Science, and SAT prep courses during the school year, and field trips. Students are expected to participate year-round and remain with the program throughout HS.

NHS applications have been sent to all eligible seniors and juniors. Eligibility is determined by possessing the minimum GPA of 3.0 from 9th-11th grade (for seniors) and 3.5 from 9th-10th grade (for juniors), as well as having no disciplinary infractions on record from the current or previous school year. Senior Capstone TEDx-style talks (Freeman/Mikalaitis) All Classes

It’s that time of year again! The 9th annual Senior Capstone TEDx-style talks will be held on Monday, May 22, Tuesday, May 23, and Wednesday, May 24 in the Auditorium. Please save the date!

A Sign-Up Genius will be released and available (beginning the week of May 16) to your teachers so that they may sign up for their classes to attend. Please encourage them to do so! This year’s group of students is particularly inspiring; they have produced an array of books, podcasts, and films, along with websites, research papers, and proposals that are to be applauded.

Prize Declamation 5/5, R6 & R7 (Harari & Kerpan) Class II, I

Prize Declamation will take place in the auditorium on Friday, May 5, during R6 and R7. This event will be attended by members of the 25th and 50th reunion classes, families, interested staff and administrators, and students in Class I and II who are present for these periods. Teachers with these students are asked to please escort them to the auditorium and provide direction and supervision during seating and the event. All students from predominantly junior and senior classes are welcome to attend.

Congrats to BLS JCL for taking 1st place in the whole school contest at MassJCL State Convention last weekend!

Are you interested in international affairs and/or thinking of pursuing a career in foreign service? Interested in learning more about what ambassadors do and about the path to get there?

Come to the Schawbel Center on Thursday, May 4 at 2:30 pm to hear from Ambassador Lawrence Silverman, BLS Class of 1973. With more than 30 years of experience in the U.S. Foreign Service in the Middle East, Central and Eastern Europe, Silverman has held many significant roles in the State Department including:

  • Former U.S. Ambassador to Kuwait
  • Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs
  • The State Department’s Director of Israel and Palestine Affairs
  • Vice President Biden’s Special Advisor for Europe and Russia

During this program, Ambassador Silverman will share his experiences and wisdom on career pathways in foreign service. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and meet a former ambassador who graduated from BLS. No rsvp is necessary.

Crew Ergathon, this Saturday! (Pierce) All Classes

Please support BLS Crew this Saturday, April 29th, at their annual ERGATHON to raise money for equipment. An “ERG” is short for ergometer, the rowing machine rowers use for training and fitness. During the Ergathon, each rower takes a turn on the erg for a one-hour shift and will attempt to row 10,000 meters. StatStart (Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Biostatistics Department)-Bateman-Class IV, III, II, I

The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Biostatistics Department is excited to host StatStart this summer. StatStart is a month-long summer program intended for high school students from underrepresented backgrounds. Students participating in the program will receive an introduction to statistics, data science, and computing. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to analyze real-world data by working on group projects led by a graduate student mentor. We will explore how quantitative skills can be used to solve public health issues!

The program runs from July 5th to July 27th, Monday to Thursday from 10 AM – 2 PM EST, at the Harvard campus. Classes will be taught by Harvard Biostats Ph.D. students and will provide mentorship and college preparatory skills. The program will conclude with student presentations on Friday, July 28th.

The application for StatStart is now live and due on Friday, June 2, 2023. Please note there is no fee associated with this program.
