Come audition for El Coquí Espectacular and the Bottle of Doom (Gels) All Classes

Calling all Latinx Actors! Come audition for El Coquí Espectacular and the Bottle of Doom. Auditions will be October 19 and 20 after school in the black box. Sign ups are on the bulletin board across the hall from the black box.

Alex, a comic book artist whose ideas might be “too Puerto Rican,” has begun secretly dressing up as his creation: El Coquí Espectacular, defender of Nuyoricans in all five boroughs! When his brother Joe is fired from a project for not being Puerto Rican enough, the two, with the help of a young photographer named Yesica, hatch a plan: to debut El Coquí at the Puerto Rican Day Parade and prove themselves to the world. El Coquí Espectacular and the Bottle of Doom examines the ways in which we define our heritage and ourselves.

While the characters are particularly Puerto Rican, I believe that anyone with a Latinx background could relate to the themes of authentic identity in this play.

Talk About Mental Health: Stories That Save Lives (Luu) All Classes

Due to lack of awareness about depression and other mental illnesses, many people deny that their family members suffer from depression, refusing to accept medication and professional treatment. Instead, they choose to ignore the issue or show “tough love,” which ultimately leads to tragedy.

The new documentary “Stories That Save Lives,” produced by award-winning documentary director Professor Chuangfu Chang, tells the real experience of how two families who have fallen into the abyss of depression emerged from its depths.

Please join United Chinese Americans WAVES and their partners for a panel discussion, during which a 12-minute clip of the film will be shown, followed by discussion with the featured family members, the filmmaker, and a psychiatrist. See flyer for more details.
