Happy Haitian Flag Day to all of our students and staff of Haitian decent. Haitian Flag Day is the celebration of the creation of the flag during Haitian Heritage Month. The flag was originally created during the time of the Haitian Revolution. The revolution led by Jean Jacques Dessalines, a former slave, and Alexandre Petion, a free man of color, was the first successful slave uprising in the world. The first Haitian flag was sewn by Catherine Flon, Jean Jacques Dessalines’ goddaughter, on May 18th, 1803. The current flag has changed several times in Haitian history. At one point the flag’s primary colors were red and black! The motto on the flag is L’Union fait la Force, which means with Unity there is Strength. On this day we celebrate the resilience and heritage of the people of the island of Haiti!
